It is such a wonder to watch newborn puppies enter the world. They are so helpless and small.

Tiny little feet and toes - unable to see or hear - they rely on their mother and us so very much.

We take the responsibility very seriously and love watching them develop and grow.

What happens when a mother gives birth at Tamaruke?

When one of the 'girls' arrives from her guardian family she is taken into our home not out in the stables. This allows her to readjust to us before she delivers her babies.

We stay with Mum throught the birthing process and then keep Mum and her babies here at the house, in a special room = all snuggled up in their own individual birting center - which we cover - so that mum feels secure and comfortable. This allows us to tend to Mum's needs and ensure the puppies stay healthy and safe. Mum has access to the house yard and also spends time inside with us whenever she feels the want to do so.

Once the puppies are born we allow Mum to bond with her new babies and then take her out for a warm bath and blow dry (puppies are within sight).

We change and freshen all of the bedding and put a warming mat into half of the birthing crate.

Mum and puppies are then made comfortable and we offer mum a warm milk mixture (Milk, Yogurt, Egg etc ) to give tham all a good start. This Milk mix is offered daily as a compliment to a healthy diet.

We keep the environment quiet and relaxed with dim lighting and not too much activity.

They remain here until the puppies are mobile at which time we move them into an individual airconditioned stable area with a heated Whelping Box.

When the puppies are 4-5 weeks old we start to introduce solid food to the puppies and the weaning process begins.

When weaning is completed and mum has returned to her guardian family - the litter remain in the heated whelping box with acces to grass for toileting.

This assist you when your puppy arrives as they are trained to naturally 'toilet' on grass and not on paper or floors.

We socialise all of the puppies and they are exposed to general noise and activity before they leave us for their forever home.
